Week 1 & 2: Nationalism
How did Literacy techniques affected Nationalism in WW2?

How the news used literacy to effect nationalism and war was by describing trench warfare as a short term utopia full of fun, glory and exciting battles. They also talked about how great their nation is and basically giving the public reasons why they should and can go to war. As an example Nazi Germans openly talked about how powerful their armies were and how its a “institution ordained by god”. To create tension between two nations they called their actions or way of life either “immoral” or “inhuman”. This gives their people reason why they are “superior” to they countor part. Another example is for the news exaggerate and sensationalistic approach to reporting news. They would exaggerate minor problems into very problematic
Example of WW2 Propaganda

To what extend was Nationalism used by the Nazi’s to justify mass murder and unspeakable tortures?
Some of reasons they put Jews into concentration camps all comes down to that they thought they were “superior”. Nazi Germany thought that Jew were “inhuman and immoral” and that was their only reason they committed these acts. During our time, we understand that this can’t justify what they did but during nationalist Europe more people were inclined to take it as a justifiable reason or didn’t know what was happening to the people they brought in.
